As more riders return to our trains, more trains are returning to our riders.
Starting Monday, March 7, Blue Line passengers will get to ride 2-car trains throughout the day, rather than the single-car trains used as of late. This boost in onboard capacity comes as the Blue Line sees its highest average weekday ridership since the start of the pandemic. Our riders tell us they value extra space for comfort and safety, so we’re putting out more 2-car trains to allow passengers to spread out!
“We’re thrilled to see ridership coming back on what has historically been our most successful light rail line,” said VTA’s Service Planning Manager Jay Tyree. “We are hopeful that doubling onboard capacity as COVID cases are going down will further advance our ridership recovery.”
VTA has been grappling with ongoing global supply chain issues over the last several months, which limited operations to mostly single-car trains. The maintenance team has since made great strides in overcoming those challenges, reaching a point where weekday 2-car Blue Line trains are once again possible.
Two-car Blue Line trains will run on weekdays throughout the day, with single car trains returning later in the evening and on weekends. Green and Orange Line trains will remain single car trains for now.
