Starting April 16, 2025, drivers in Gilroy will encounter permanent road closures as construction begins on long-awaited improvements to the U.S. 101 and State Route 25 interchange.
As part of Phase 1 of the project, access to U.S. 101 from Castro Valley Road and Mesa Road will permanently close. In their place, a newly designed, extended southbound off-ramp to SR 25 is built to ease congestion and improve commuter safety.
Those heading to Gavilan College should plan to reroute via Monterey Road to W. Luchessa Avenue, continuing to Thomas Road and then Santa Teresa Boulevard.
The new ramp will be twice as long as the current one, making it safer and smoother for drivers.
A new bike path will also be added along the off-ramp, giving cyclists a safe way to travel between Santa Teresa Blvd and the 101/25 interchange. Cyclists can enter the bike path from a new roundabout at the end of Castro Valley Rd.
Clear detour signs and traffic control will help guide drivers through the transition.
