For decades, bike lockers have been made available to transit users at VTA light rail stops, Caltrain stations, Park & Ride lots, and transit centers. Most of VTA’s bike lockers are 20 to 30 years old and have worn out to the point where many are inoperable or have significant security issues. In the coming months, VTA will replace its 200-plus bike lockers with new, more secure, on-demand BikeLink e-lockers operated and maintained by eLock Technologies. Each e-Locker provides two separate bicycle parking spaces, creating nearly 400 upgraded bicycle parking spaces.
VTA’s existing bike lockers are a mix of fiberglass resin and metal lockers. Some lockers have an electronic locking mechanism for on-demand parking, while the rest are rented to individual users and accessed via a key.
This project will remove all existing bike lockers and replace them with new, on-demand e-Lockers. The new bike lockers will connect to the cloud via Wi-Fi, allowing customers to see in real-time if a parking space is available. Every location will have at least one parking space for oversized bicycles. Lockers can be rented for 5 cents an hour using the BikeLink app, Clipper Card, or BikeLink card.
Plan Ahead
VTA acknowledges this project's potential impacts and advises those who utilize the bike lockers to plan accordingly. Construction to replace the current bike lockers will begin in mid-November, with plans to complete the project by the end of 2025. VTA will replace lockers in a few locations at a time. Bike lockers will be out of commission for 3-4 days during the removal and installation. Notices will be posted on bike lockers before they are replaced. The detailed locker replacement schedule will be shared as it becomes available.
