The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has been awarded $900,000 from the Federal Transit Administration as part of its ongoing commitment to integrate affordable housing with public transit. This funding is a significant win for the community and will ultimately help address the Bay Area's housing crisis while promoting sustainable, transit-oriented development.
The grant will support the work of VTA, City of Gilroy, and the California High Speed Rail Authority currently putting together a Vision Plan to provide early recommendations around land use, urban design, and multimodal transportation for the Gilroy Station Area. VTA is providing matching funds of $225,000 for a total of $1.125 million.
The ultimate goal is to provide residents with better access to public transportation and support the region’s climate goals by reducing car usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and air pollution. By strategically locating affordable housing near public transit, VTA aims to create vibrant, accessible communities that empower South County residents to commute more easily and affordably.
“This funding is pivotal in helping us build equitable and accessible communities across Santa Clara County,” says VTA General Manager and CEO Carolyn Gonot.
With this funding, VTA will work closely with local agencies, developers, and community stakeholders to advance the planning and implementation stages of these housing projects. The effort aligns with VTA’s long-term vision of a more inclusive and sustainable region, where transit accessibility meets the pressing need for affordable housing.
In addition to the overall station area plan, VTA is ready to share feedback received last month about existing challenges in using the Gilroy Transit Center, and desired improvements. Community Outreach staff will hold multiple events throughout November to provide feedback in person.
