Ask VTA: Reducing Driving from Development Projects

Date

A recent California Senate Bill requires cities and counties to consider the amount of driving that would result from new developments like housing, office buildings, or retail spaces. How can we support the development needed for Santa Clara County’s growing population without increasing the amount of driving taking place? One project looking at this issue is VTA’s Equitable Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Mitigation Program, which aims to work across city and town borders to reduce the amount of driving from land use developments in Santa Clara County.

Another strategy to reduce driving from development projects is Transportation Demand Management (TDM). TDM includes encouraging transit use, ridesharing, walking, biking, and teleworking. Learn more at December’s Ask VTA event, where transportation planning staff will answer questions about programs, policies, and strategies to reduce driving from new developments.
