Prioritize Multimodal Sustainable Travel

Promote active transportation and high-capacity transit as the prioritized access strategy to increase equitable impact and support healthy, active, and engaged communities. Additional outcomes include reduced emissions, decreased VMT, safer streets, more connected communities, and improved public health.

Plan transit facilities that:

  • Provide safe and convenient access for all people, including youth, the elderly and those with disabilities.
  • Improve bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to transit, including connections between trail systems and stations.
  • Integrate the design of transit and bicycle facilities to ensure safe and convenient operations for both modes.

Implement policies that support healthy, active, and engaged communities.

    • Manage parking through Transportation Demand Management measures (e.g., parking reduction incentives, discounted transit passes, etc.) and locate parking at the rear of buildings or within buildings to reduce their prominence in the public realm.
    • Support design of streets as places that are vibrant areas of activity and public life.
    • Implement standards that support the reallocation of street space to create inviting social spaces that could include seating, restaurant uses, landscaping, etc.
