US 101 Interchanges Improvement Project: San Antonio Rd to Charleston Rd/Rengstorff Ave

Overview

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto proposes to modify the San Antonio Rd. and Charleston Rd/Rengstorff Ave. interchanges on United State Route 101 (US 101) in the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto.  

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Improve access for all traffic modes in the area including bicycles, pedestrians, and transit;
  • Improve safety for all travel modes in the area;
  • Improve mobility for all travel modes...

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto proposes to modify the San Antonio Rd. and Charleston Rd/Rengstorff Ave. interchanges on United State Route 101 (US 101) in the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto.  

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to:

  • Improve access for all traffic modes in the area including bicycles, pedestrians, and transit;
  • Improve safety for all travel modes in the area;
  • Improve mobility for all travel modes to planned development adjacent to the project area;
  • Improve traffic operations at the US 101 interchanges at San Antonio Road and Rengstorff Avenue, as well as the local street network.

Project Features

The proposed improvements include but are not limited to the following:

  • Modify existing local street intersections and upgrade bicycle and pedestrian facilities along San Antonio Road, and Charleston Road/Rengstorff Avenue within the project limits;
  • Add an on-ramp from San Antonio Road and Rengstorff Avenue structures over US-101. Close the on-ramp from Charleston Road to southbound US 101;
  • Replace the existing San Antonio Road and Rengstorff Avenue structures over US 101 with a wider structure to better meet transportation needs, including complete streets elements such as bike lanes and sidewalks;
  • Add a southbound auxiliary lane on US 101, as necessary.
