Overview
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), in cooperation with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the Cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto proposes to modify the San Antonio Road and Charleston Road/Rengstorff Avenue interchanges on United State Route 101 (US 101) in the cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto.
Objectives
The purpose of this project is to:
- Improve access for all travel modes in the area including bicycles, pedestrians,
- Improve mobility for all travel modes to planned development adjacent to the project area;
- Improve traffic operations at the US 101 interchanges at San Antonio Road, Rengstorff Avenue, and the local street network
Project Features
The proposed improvements include but are not limited to the following:
- Modify existing local street intersections and upgrade bicycle and pedestrian facilities along San Antonio Road, and Charleston Road/Rengstorff Avenue within the project limits;
- Add an on-ramp from San Antonio Road to southbound US 101. Close the on-ramp from Charleston Road to southbound US 101;
- Widen and replace the existing San Antonio Road and Rengstorff Avenue structures over US 101 with a wider structure to better meet transportation needs, including complete streets elements such as bike lanes and sidewalks;
- Add a southbound auxiliary lane on US 101, as necessary.
